As successor of the BMW R75 from the BMW Motorrad /7 series, the first BMW R80 was released in 1977. With just a little more power than the BMW R65 and in terms of price more friendly than the BMW R100, the BMW R80 became a favourite of many among us. Therefore, it is not without reason that people kept asking about this motorbike, despite the fact that it would be taken out of production quite early in 1980.

The real breakthrough of the BMW R80 appeared with the BMW R80 GS version for off-road and street use. After the (strongly modified) version proved to be very successful in the Paris-Dakar, not long afterwards this guy came on the market with a mono liver instead of the swingarm that everybody was familiar with. That not only meant less weight and easier rear wheel changes, but also that the steerability of the BMW R80 GS is very tight and reliable. Not without reason one of the best steering engines BMW has ever made!
